Mundi Digitalis

Rex Mundi Book 1 front cover Rex Mundi is now available as a digital download from Dark Horse! Actually, it has been for some time. I guess for me comics on paper will always feel more… real. Or something. But I'm getting used to absorbing them from a cool, glowing screen. The best part is you can get the first Rex Mundi book in digital format for about half the cost of the print version.

I mean – you could get it for "free" from Bittorrent, but then you'd be stealing from me. And you wouldn't want to do that! At the very least, wait until I move into a mansion with a bowling alley, an oxygen chamber, a ferris wheel, and laser turrets…

Mmm… laser turrets…

Pitufos de Hitler

¡Juan came to visit!

¡Juan came to visit!

Juan is, of course, the artist who drew more issues of Rex Mundi than any other – the one who finished out the series. He's also one of the weirdest chaps you'll ever meet, aside from me. He came with his lovely wife Laura, an architect. We had lots of fun visiting the Yankee Candle Flagship Store in historic South Deerfield, Massachusetts

Handsome devils! Portrait of Juan and Arvid acting like morons.

– and learning about our respective cultures. "Pouloupoulou" is Argentinian Spanish for "popcorn" – I didn't know that. Thanks, Juan! Also, "smurf" is "pitufo". The one little dark spot of Juan's visit occurred in Yankee Candle, where we uncovered a Hitler Smurf. Yes. And I have documentary evidence:

It was really weird.

Rex Mundi Movie Update

The Hollywood Reporter just made it officially official: Rex Mundi has a new writing team, the same chaps who did Tron: Legacy. They've got a really interesting take on the story. In fact, it was something I wanted to explore in the comic, but didn't have room (or an excuse) for.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what they come up with.

Atget Lives

Eugène Atget is one of the best things I discovered through Rex Mundi. I first encountered him many moons ago, poking around The Strand bookstore in New York City for reference photos of Paris for EricJ. I pulled out a battered collection of Atget’s work, and the image on the front cover was better than perfect; it was my first window into the world of Rex Mundi.

Atget took photos of Paris in the late 1800s and early 1900s. They were tearing down the dark, cramped, medieval and riot-prone town at that time to re-make it into the city everyone knows, the city of Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant.

Of course, something is always lost in "progress". That's what Atget captured. He'd go out very early in the morning and take pictures of the old neighborhoods before the steam shovels ground them up. Do a search for him and you might even recognize some backgrounds from Rex Mundi. And remnants of the old city still exist – there's a piece in the New York Times today showcasing some of surviving places where Atget took photos.

Most of the photos in the “le Journal de la Liberté” newspapers of Rex Mundi are Atget’s. Amazingly, there's a comic book store on the very street of one of the photos I used, at the end of Book One, chapter five. The store is called Arkham Comics, and Rex Mundi was their featured title of the week this week. Arkham’s a little down from the picture, seven Rue Broca.

Merci beacoup, mon amis d’Arkham. One of these days I'll make it back to Paris and stop in for a little guerrilla visit.

And I must give a shout out to the mysterious comte St. Germain, who told me about Arkham. The comte has a terrific French language pop culture blog. Check it out, whether or not you read French.

Rex Mundi Book 4 Back in Print

Rex Mundi Book 4 front coverI just checked on amazon.com, and new copies of Book 4 are starting at $35! That's because it's been out of print for a while. I'm flattered someone think's it's worth that much money, but it will be back in stock this month.

So save yourself some money! Wait a week or two. I'll post here when it's officially available.
